Not even three months into his pro career, San Francisco 49er Trey Lance has received a rave review from teammate Mohamed Sanu. Sanu sat down with the DNP-CD Sports Podcast to discuss what he’s already seen from his rookie quarterback.
“The thing about Trey is he’s a very hard working kid,” Sanu said. “He listens. Very diligent. He’s the type of kid that puts in the extra work. I just love his energy. You can tell the way he comes in the room and has so much charisma, and he just has that ‘it factor.’”
The Niners don’t report to training camp until July 27, but Sanu has gotten a head start with Lance. Sanu, a talented passer in his own right (he’s completed seven of eight throws in his NFL career), worked with Lance during spring OTAs. The two have also linked up for summer workouts. While he hasn’t seen a ton of lance, Sanu is all in on the North Dakota State alum.
“It’s cool to see. Such a young kid, but still he has a special talent,” Sanu said. “It’s just up to him to keep working every day, do his thing, and his opportunity will come when it comes.”

Lance, the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 draft, was a controversial prospect. Like Carson Wentz, Lance dominated FCS competition at NDSU. But he has to prove that he can do it against NFL athletes. Sanu’s convinced that Lance has the mental fortitude to succeed at the highest level.
“The way he goes out on the field, he’s confident,” Sanu said. “The confidence he has and the throws that he’s making. And then when he doesn’t get it right, he is eager to learn and fix it immediately and that’s something that’s very, very important especially for the quarterback position.”
With veteran Jimmy Garoppolo on the depth chart, coach Kyle Shanahan can afford to develop Lance at his own pace. San Francisco’s 2021-22 season kicks off on September 12th in Detroit.
