If 49ers fans were looking for a positive development in negotiations with Brock Purdy, they have one.
The San Francisco 49ers offseason has been mired by headlines surrounding the contract situation of starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Of course, the Niners have had the ability to stop the rumor mill by getting a deal done with their top signalcaller. Nevertheless, the 49ers ongoing negotiations appear to be promising enough that Purdy has chosen to attend voluntary offseason conditioning, per a report by Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Given the various dramatics in 49ers negotiations with stars like Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey, and Trent Williams in recent offseasons, there has been an understandable (even if preemptive) fear about how things would be managed with the team’s young quarterback. However, this is a clear sign that Purdy’s talks with the 49ers seem far less contentious than other negotiations. It’s worth noting that Pelissero and Rapoport note that tight end George Kittle will not be in attendance amidst his own extension talks.
As the Niners look to bounce back from a rough 2024 campaign, it seems pivotal that Purdy is able to be in the building as much as possible to forge relationships and connections with his new teammates and coaches. While no deal is done (and Purdy could still skip team minicamps this summer if negotiations take a negative turn), it seems like the 49ers have shown enough effort in extension talks for Purdy to attend voluntary conditioning.
