Garoppolo got the start during the 49ers-Chargers preseason game on Sunday. He was pretty awful (3-of-6 for 15 yards and one interception) against a Chargers team that played mostly backups. Trey Lance, meanwhile, started slow but finished strong and showed off pretty plenty of potential. The North Dakota State alum finished with 102 yards and two touchdowns with one pick completing eight of his 14 attempts.
Is it time to panic if you’re Garoppolo? Cowherd thinks so. He thought Garoppolo played without confidence against the Chargers on Sunday. It could be an indication the veteran quarterback is starting to feel the pressure with Lance playing so well.
“I think the game is in his head right now and I don’t know if it’s solvable,” Cowherd said about Garoppolo on Monday. “It wasn’t for Carson Wentz until he went to Indianapolis.”

There may be something here. Jimmy Garoppolo has always played poorly under pressure. The 49ers didn’t help when they threw Trey Lance into the mix.
Most of Lance’s strengths are Garoppolo’s weaknesses. He throws a beautiful deep ball, is accurate at almost every level and is an elite runner. Garoppolo struggles against the blitz and overthrows receivers on a consistent basis.
This could end up being a good thing for the 49ers, though. If Garoppolo can’t play well because of some quarterback competition, how can the Niners expect him to play well in big in-game moments? They can’t.
