Leo Luna and Javier Vega discuss that and more in today’s Oh Hey There podcast
We made it! Training camp 2021 is here, and the stink of the 2020 season can now officially be forgotten forever. Episode two of the Niners Nation Oh Hey There! Podcast took a look at which defensive position battles to watch in camp this summer. One particular area of interest to co-host Javier Vega is CB2 – who plays opposite Jason Verrett this year?
“I don’t think Emmanuel Moseley is as great in man coverage as people think. When that pass rush wasn’t there, we saw Moseley give up a lot of yards, a lot of targets, a lot of receptions. They were just constantly attacking his side.
If the door is cracked, I think Ambry Thomas has a shot to be CB2 here. I really think that the 49ers are going to want to play a little bit more man coverage in 2021 as opposed to all the zone concepts they ran in 2020…I really think CB2 is a competition to watch in camp. It’ll start developing, we’ll probably hear about snap counts. We’ll see who is getting run with the ones. Ambry Thomas has a shot here to get run with the ones.”
While many people probably assumed the job was Moseley’s to lose, it will be interesting to see how the 49ers address the position in training camp. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have continually stressed competition throughout their tenure, so we’ll see if Thomas is given a chance to rise up and take that job.

- What are the reasonable expectations for Dee Ford this year?
- Exactly how good of a defense is DeMeco Ryans inheriting, and what is the ceiling this year?
