The Dan Campbell era begins this Sunday when the Detroit Lions host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
The new Lions head coach wants to make strong first impression going up against what’s expected to be a talented 49ers team. To do so, he’s preparing for anything and everything Kyle Shanahan could throw at him.
Jimmy Garoppolo will start at quarterback for the 49ers on Sunday, as expected. Trey Lance, meanwhile, is dealing with a chipped bone in his finger and might not even play. Regardless, the Lions are preparing for a scenario in which both Garoppolo and Lance get snaps on Sunday.
Campbell told reporters on Thursday that he’s preparing for all of Shanahan’s offensive play-book ahead of the Lions’ season opener on Sunday.
“I’m well aware of all of the games people play,” Campbell said, via Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press. “It’s very easy to sit a guy out and then when all of you leave, the media leaves, he’s out there. I’ve been around where a guy had a neck brace on and then everybody left and then he throws it off and he’s out there at practice.
“So, I’m well aware of those things. We have to prepare like he’s playing. We’ll have a plan for him and we’ll be ready.”

We don’t blame Dan Campbell for not trusting Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers head coach has been more secretive than he’s ever been leading up to the 2021 season.
Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t sound like Trey Lance will be able to give it a go on Sunday. That means Jimmy Garoppolo will run the show and the Niners won’t have a running threat under center.
The Lions host the 49ers this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
