The team waived WR Andy Jones
Kyle’s update, 2:40 p.m.: The 49ers waived WR Andy Jones and signed Anthony Zettel, who spent time on the roster Week 17 in 2019 and appeared in the first two playoff games that season.
This is likely due to Dee Ford not participating in team drills early on in camp.
The NFL placed 15 players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday, and San Francisco 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley was one of the players, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
You never want to start training camp without one of your starters, especially when you are already thin at cornerback. The good news for Moseley is that — assuming he clears protocols — he shouldn’t miss too much time.
Take, for example, Kadarius Toney from the Giants. New York placed their first-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on July 22, and Tony was activated today, July 27.
If that’s the timetable, Moseley will only miss three or for practices, which isn’t the end of the world. However, that does open the door for one of the rookies to take control or at least make a name for themselves at cornerback.
I wouldn’t expect Ambry Thomas or Demmodore Lenoir to work with the first-team defense on the first day of training camp. Instead, that job will go to fan-favorite Dontae Johnson. Of course, that doesn’t mean Johnson will be the starter, but the veteran likely gets the nod.
We’ll update once there is any more information and when Moseley returns to the 49ers lineup. Obviously, we hope Moseley is safe, healthy, and doesn’t have any symptoms.
Also, according to the NFL’s transaction wire, Jaquiski Tartt was not placed on the PUP list, which would indicate he passed his physical.
