Former NFL QB Alex Smith Officially Lands New Job

August 17, 2021 by The Spun

Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith against the Bengals.

After officially retiring from the NFL just a few months ago, former quarterback Alex Smith officially has a new job. And it’s a big one.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Smith has signed on with ESPN as an analyst. Per the report, he will appear on multiple shows and in various roles, mostly breaking down the NFL.

Some of the big shows Smith will appear on include SportsCenter, Monday Night Countdown and Sunday NFL Countdown. Given how in-demand Smith was as an analyst after retiring, it’s not surprising that ESPN wants to showcase his talents ASAP.

Smith joining ESPN should pretty much end any possibility of him returning to the NFL. It caps off an astounding career that had as many peaks and valleys as any in NFL history.

Coming out of Utah in 2005, Alex Smith was the No. 1 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers. His career got off to a slow start as injuries and poor play led the team to go through numerous offensive coordinators.

But when Jim Harbaugh arrived in 2011, his career really took off. Smith went 13-3 in 2011, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game after a career year.

In 2013, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs and promptly made his first Pro Bowl. It was the first of three he would make under Andy Reid’s guidance.

The low-point came in 2018, when a severe leg injury while he was with the Washington Football Team nearly ended his career. But he returned in 2020 and helped lead Washington to the NFC East crown, winning Comeback Player of the Year honors for his efforts.

Good luck in the new role, Alex. We look forward to seeing you on ESPN.
