49ers QB Brock Purdy and wife Jenna welcome first child!

“Head coach Kyle Shanahan clarified the absence following Sunday’s practice, saying, “Yeah, Brock had some family stuff yesterday—all good news.”

Now, the reason behind Purdy’s absence is clear—he and his wife, Jenna Purdy, welcomed their first child, Millie Joleen Purdy.”

49ers’ Jake Moody finds himself in uncharted territory. Can he find his range? (paywall)

““Some of these elite talents at specialists are kind of like finely tuned foreign cars,” Morstead said. “And all of a sudden, some cog gets out of whack and it’s not back right and you’re trying to work through it but there’s no time to work through it because you’re in the middle of the season — but they need you back. Just a tough situation.

“There’s a reason he was drafted so high. He’s super talented, and he’s a young guy with a chip on his shoulder who’s a little pissed off.”

Thuds and duds: C.J. West, Nick Bosa, Mac Jones shine in 49ers’ padded practice (paywall)

“Cornerback Dallis Flowers, who played for new assistant head coach Gus Bradley with the Indianapolis Colts, turned some heads. He tipped the ball to himself for an acrobatic interception against rookie Jordan Watkins in the one-on-ones and then showed some sticky coverage in the scrimmage sessions.

Saleh was singing his praises on the field after the interception.

“Surprised the rest of the DBs didn’t jump up and down for him, man,” Saleh said. “It was a really nice rep. He had perfect technique, put himself in good position to make a play, and he made it.””

49ers rookie Upton Stout takes advantage of reps during Day 5 of training camp

“Stout, a third-round draft pick from Western Kentucky, has impressed the coaching staff. And Saleh said they are striking the balance of putting more — but not too much — on his plate.

“He’s a sharp kid. It’s definitely not too big for him,” Saleh said of Stout. “We’ve got to be careful as a coaching staff. You still have to slow-play it, regardless of how smart you feel like they are. There’s still a lot of things they’re still learning. You want to push the envelope, but never too far so he can’t execute his job.”
