Why 49ers star Christian McCaffrey is training less this NFL offseason, per dad
“He’s patient this year,” Ed McCaffrey told Odegard. “Last year, he was really eager to get to the field after they lost the Super Bowl. He couldn’t wait to play again and probably over-trained a little bit going into training camp. But this year he’s got a great plan.
“He’s been religious about it, getting great workouts in and trying to stay patient. We’re going to blink and they’re going to be suiting up for Week 1. It’s going to be here before we know it, and he’ll be ready.”
McCaffrey attended all of San Francisco’s offseason program with what he referred to as “zero restrictions.”
While he takes a new approach on the field with his training this summer, he’ll also adjust to a major new part of his life off the field as he and his wife Olivia are expecting their first child in the coming weeks.
“He’s got a lot of wonderful things going on in his life,” Ed told Odegard. “He got married last year to Olivia (Culpo). Olivia is a saint. They’re having a baby. I’m going to be a grandad next month. Luckily, Olivia understands his schedule. He never misses a workout, never misses a treatment.”
49ers named among best landing spots for veteran nickel Mike Hilton
“If the 49ers plan to keep Lenoir primarily on the outside, Holder believes bringing in a player like Hilton would be a smart move.
“Lenoir made his money at slot corner over the last two years, but he may play on the boundary more in 2025 after Charvarius Ward’s departure in free agency,” Holder wrote. “So, there might be room for the 49ers to bring in a veteran nickel ahead of training camp.”
Hilton would provide an immediate boost to a defense that struggled against the run last season. He has earned a Pro Football Focus defensive grade of 75.9 or higher in each of the past two seasons, and his 91.7 run-defense grade in 2024 was a career best, ranking him as the top defensive back in the NFL in that category. That could be key for a 49ers defense needing a reliable corner to patrol the slot, where downhill tackling and quick instincts are essential.”
49ers QBs speak: Mac Jones, Tanner Mordecai on learning from Brock Purdy
“He’s very, like, meticulous about how he goes about his work,” Jones told beat reporter Jennifer Lee Chan. “I’ve known him for a decent amount of time, but to really get close with him, and see how he operates, he’s very, like Type A, very organized, and he wants everything to be perfect. That’s why he’s had success in the league.
“He’s done it very consistently, and he’s really striving to do it again. He’s not just satisfied because he had a couple good years. He wants to be great every day, so it’s pretty cool.”
Mordecai, entering his second NFL season after signing as an undrafted free agent last year, has also been impressed by Purdy’s meticulous preparation.
“I think it was interesting seeing him, just Saturdays before the game, how well he knew the game plan,” Mordecai shared. “I think there’s a lot of stuff he does on his own, outside the building, and obviously, it translates to the field, and that’s definitely something I learned from him, too.”
