San Francisco 49ers sign Josh Norman to address secondary depth
Norman teased he was joining the 49ers via social media over the weekend. On Friday, he tweeted, “Wonder what’s the temperature in Cali right about now” and followed on Sunday by tweeting, “In the Final hours before the breaking point. A decision has been made! Now there’s only one thing left to do…”

49ers Notebook: Josh Norman arrives and Trey Lance’s splint comes off
- Dee Ford revealed Monday that he pushed himself more than he should have in 2019, and it was similar to what happened the first time he injured his back with the Kansas City Chiefs. He admitted he wasn’t fully healthy and tried to power through the injury, but, “backs, spines don’t work that way.” Ford said that he’ll be on a “pitch count” when the 49ers face the Lions on Sunday, and that he and Nick Bosa are “in the same situation,” which would seem to indicate that the 49ers will ease Bosa back to full action, too. With their defensive line depth, that’s a viable option.
It’s possible Lance’s finger is 100 percent healthy and the 49ers were being careful with him. Or it’s possible he’s still recovering and won’t play at all Week 1.
We’ll have a better idea Wednesday. If the 49ers clear Lance to throw in that practice, he certainly could play and even start Week 1 against the Lance. If they don’t clear him to throw by then, they probably won’t let him throw much if at all this Sunday.

Kyler Koster and Liam McKeone write: “It won’t be long now before Trey Lance is one of the most feared quarterbacks in the league. But he’s not there yet, meaning Dan Campbell’s hometown introduction isn’t as bleak as it could have been. Expect the Motor City maniac to throw in an entire kitchen’s sink of gadget plays and special teams hijinks to bring this one down to the wire, only to lose in the same predictable fashion all his predecessors mastered.”
These are players who are first on the 53-man roster and then move to IR. They won’t count against the roster while on IR, and they’ll be eligible to return after three weeks.
DL Maurice Hurst (ankle)
It seemed likely Hurst would go on short-term IR after suffering his high ankle sprain in the second preseason game. He made the initial 53-man roster, then went to IR at the same time as Harris. His time line is unclear as well.
