Your daily San Francisco 49ers news for Monday, August 26th, 2024
“Floyd’s knee injury is considered day-to-day, which is encouraging news for the 49ers as their Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets rapidly approaches.
Gross-Matos’ knee injury is more serious, but he’s still considered week-to-week—better news than it could have been.”
49ers’ Isaac Guerendo faces new question after big return: Keep No. 49? (paywall)
“But Guerendo hinted his thinking may have changed. An old football adage says that the player makes the number and not the other way around — and Guerendo chuckled at his locker when asked about his future in No. 49. He remembered his original request to Turner and he considered all that’s happened since, from his first NFL offseason program to the training camp hamstring injury to Friday’s splashy return.
“I think there’s a lot of good aura with the number,” Guerendo said with a smile. “It’s got a little ring to it — 49 on the 49ers. Breida had success with it, so I might as well rock it, at least for now. So I might change numbers, but we’ll see what happens.”
49ers rookie Guerendo flashes speed with long preseason kick return
“But Guerendo’s sprint down the field — the longest kick return during the NFL preseason — might be cited as Exhibit A for teams to decide to boot kickoffs through the end zone and give up the starting spot of the 30-yard line.
“We think about it a lot, but there are so many different things that you could do and there are so many different ways to attack it,” he said. “You couldn’t possibly think of all the options. We have our plan in place and try to follow that as best we can.”
When asked if the 49ers’ plan was executed as it was drawn up on his long return, Guerendo cracked, “Probably not.”
He added, “We had a plan but if a guy jumps out of his gap, a seam opens up, and you try to hit them.”
Latu coming on strong in competition for final 49ers roster spot
“Tight end Cameron Latu went up to haul in a 24-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Allen on Friday night.
A few yards away on the 49ers’ sideline, George Kittle reacted with an abundance of enthusiasm. He jumped in the air, pumped his fist and looked as if he wanted to rush the field to congratulate Latu.
Latu is beginning to show some of the promise the 49ers saw in him when they selected him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He finished the exhibition season with eight catches for 84 yards.”
