Golden Nuggets: Welcome to the Bay, Rock-Ya!

Your daily San Francisco 49ers news for Friday, April 12th, 2024

49ers sign veteran CB Rock Ya-Sin to one-year contract

“Last season with Baltimore, the 27-year-old appeared in 14 regular-season games (one start) and one playoff contest, compiling 12 tackles and two passes defensed.”

Lombardi: 49ers NFL mock draft: Packaging picks to move up for an impact offensive lineman (paywall)

“Many evaluators believe that Fautanu, given his 6-3 height, will be better suited for guard at the NFL level. But his 35-inch arms stack up well against pro tackles, so there’s a best-of-both-worlds dynamic at play here since Fautanu boasts the short-area quickness of a more compact guard with the arm length of an exterior offensive lineman.

In “The Beast”, Dane Brugler writes that Fautanu “locks on and mauls defenders in the run game, turning bodies with sheer strength as a base blocker.” If Kyle Shanahan and company agree, this is a player they’ll covet. There’s an added bonus of picking Fautanu here: The 49ers can make sure the Los Angeles Rams, who’ve been stocking up on offensive linemen, can’t nab him at No. 19.”

49ers to host pre-draft visits with Andru Phillips, Evan Anderson

“Phillips is ranked as the No. 61 overall player on Dane Brugler’s big board for The Athletic. The draft analyst noted, “With his lower-body quickness and agility, Phillips can drive from zone or stay within arm’s length downfield in man. He prefers to play a physical brand of football, which is refreshing. However, his handsy tactics needs more subtlety, and his tackling requires better finishing control. Overall, Phillips falls short in a few categories, which leads to in-game volatility. He is battled-tested, though, with the athletic instincts and feisty toughness that will translate to any level of football. He won’t be a fit for every team but offers inside-outside versatility with immediate special-teams value, similar to Roger McCreary.”

During the NFL Scouting Combine, the 5’ 10 3/4” and 190-pound Phillips posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.48 seconds, a vertical jump of 42 inches, and a broad jump of 11 feet, 3 inches. He is projected to be a Day 2 selection.

Anderson appeared in 12 games with the Owls in 2023, recording 58 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss, 3.5 sacks, a pass defensed, and a fumble recovery. The defensive lineman has amassed seven sacks and 148 total tackles throughout his collegiate career.

“A wide-hipped nose, Anderson uses upper-body strength and lateral quickness to wear down the edges of blockers and defend multiple gaps (held his own versus Clemson),” Brugler wrote in his draft profile. “However, he won’t be able to beat NFL blockers with athleticism, and his bull rush tends to stall when his pad level rises. Overall, Anderson needs to play with better control, but he has the skill set and play personality to muddy gaps in the run game as a rotational NFL nose tackle.”

Terique Owens looking for NFL opportunity to follow dad’s footsteps

“He’s a late bloomer,” Terrell said of his son. “Obviously, he has the physical attributes for a receiver. For him, it’s all about reps; it’s all about experience. I think once he gets on a roster, that’s where he’ll be able to improve and enhance his skillset. He just needs to get his foot in the door. After that, it’s up to him.”

PFF identifies 49ers draft fits in Day 2 and 3

“The 49ers need help at defensive tackle, and Oregon’s Brandon Dorlus fits the bill as an athletic penetrator who can line up at nearly any spot,” Wasserman wrote.”
