Nguyen: Can the 49ers defense be elite again? What it’s doing to improve in 2024 (paywall)
“With perimeter runs, the front has to be able to disrupt the ball carrier and slow the ball down for the secondary to come up and help. And in some situations, members of the secondary are key parts of the run fit. Finding stability at nickel cornerback should help. Last season, Deommodore Lenoir cycled inside and outside situationally because he could do both at a high level. Depending on who emerges as a starter this season, the hope is that Lenoir can stay in one spot. Rookie Renardo Green, who played mostly outside at Florida State, has gotten reps at nickel in OTAs.
“You gotta understand the front so you can understand your run fit at level two,” 49ers secondary coach Daniel Bullocks said. “So if I’m at nickel, if it’s Renardo Green or Deommodore Lenoir inside, he gotta understand the front. Most times, we all are in a front with the wide nine to the tight end side. So you gotta understand the front mechanics so you can know your fit versus the run, so we won’t get gashed for an explosive play in regards to that. Sometimes (Sorensen) can tag a different call that allows him to line the stunt a different way so your gap can change based off the call.”
Bullocks says they’ve been reviewing the front mechanics and different calls up front daily so that the secondary completely understands how the front affects their jobs. He also emphasized the importance of knowing their weak spots in certain pressures.
The 49ers didn’t do much to bolster the secondary other than drafting Green. Playing as a more connected unit will be essential for improvement against the run and pass.”
How 49ers rookie Pearsall made favorable first impression on Warner
“I give all the rookies a chance to prove themselves,” Warner said. “You’re not really going to prove much in OTAs when you’re in shorts and T-shirt, but I really like what I’ve seen in terms of how he’s operated around the building, you know, going up to guys and shaking their hand, looking them in the eye, ‘Hey, man, I’m Ricky, nice to meet you.’ Little stuff like that goes a long way.”
Brock Purdy: Having a full offseason to attack things has made me better
“So for me, I had that taste in my mouth, and then get back into the gym, start slowly, working into it. And then here, in OTAs, getting with [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and going over all the games that we played in, every play, and going over situational football and stuff, and taking that and actually going out on the field and running things and repping things, and throwing to the receivers. Last year, I didn’t have that, so now that I’m able to attack those kinds of things, I feel like I’ve gotten better.”
“The thing we knew, we needed to rework our defensive line, and we wanted to have some stability,”
Jeremy Fowler clarifies report on 49ers’ Trent Williams potentially seeking new deal
“It’s something that multiple people have brought up to me as a possibility,” Fowler said on the “Murph and Markus” show. “Like, hey, there are whispers that he would like a new deal. It wasn’t more like a splash report or anything. I heard it enough to mention it, I’ll say that.
“But, it’s not anything I’ve confirmed as hard and fast. But there are certainly whispers among people in the industry who think that he wants a new deal or will want a new deal, and it’s in part because he’s not the highest-paid player at his position anymore. And he’s clearly still the best, even though he’s 35.”
Fowler points out that Williams is due a base salary of $20.05 million in 2024 and $22.5 million in 2025, adding, “It’s just low enough, compared to where the market’s going, where he could need an adjustment. I just see it as something that will come to a head. I don’t know what it means or how it will shake out, but they’re going to probably have to take care of him one more time.”
