How would you grade 49ers’ offseason going into training camp?

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch put in a ton of work over the past five months.

The San Francisco 49ers were one of the busiest teams of the NFL offseason. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan did their homework and re-signed several of their own free agents, mostly to short-term deals.

Another big domino fell on Wednesday when word broke that the 49ers signed All-Pro middle linebacker Fred Warner to a five-year extension worth up to $95 million, with $40.5 million guaranteed.

Locking in Warner puts the cherry on top of an outstanding offseason for San Francisco. The management team has done an excellent job of navigating a tricky salary cap situation, given the economic fallout of the pandemic.

The Niners’ brass did a great job of solidifying multiple positions of need by re-signing four members of the secondary and locking down All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams.

San Francisco also went outside the building to bring in two free agents. Lynch signed center Alex Mack to a team-friendly deal, giving the offensive line’s interior some stability.

The 49ers also inked Samson Ebukam to a two-year contract, which gives them another pass-rusher if Dee Ford isn’t able to stay healthy once again in 2021.

Of course, the biggest move Lynch and Shanahan made came back in March when the Niners traded three-first round selections, plus a 2022 third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

After months of speculation and a ridiculous amount of Mac Jones hype, the 49ers took North Dakota State QB Trey Lance. Even though incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the roster, we know Lance will be handed the keys to the franchise sooner than later.

Oddsmakers are high on the Niners, giving them the second-best odds to win the NFC. If the 49ers can remain healthy, they should find themselves contending for a Super Bowl title in 2021.

Here is a recap of what Lynch and co. have done since the season ended:

  • Claimed return specialist Nsimba Webster from the Rams
  • Signed Warner to a five-year extension.
  • Signed safety Tony Jefferson to a one-year contract.
  • Signed tight end MyCole Pruitt to a one-year deal.
  • Signed defensive lineman Maurice Hurst and free agent Arden Key to one-year contracts.
  • Signed veteran running back Wayne Gallman to a one-year contract.
  • Signed QB Nate Sudfeld to a one-year deal.
  • Re-signed slot corner K’Waun Williams to a one-year deal.
  • Re-signed defensive lineman Jordan Willis to a one-year deal.
  • Signed defensive lineman Zach Kerr to a one-year contract.
  • Re-signed safety Jaquiski Tartt to a one-year deal.
  • Signed safety Tavon Wilson to a one-year contract.
  • Re-signed cornerback Dontae Johnson to a one-year deal. ($850,000 cap hit, per Over the Cap)
  • Re-signed defensive lineman D.J. Jones to a one-year deal. ($3.3 million cap hit, per Over the Cap)
  • Signed center Alex Mack to a three-year contract (no guaranteed money after 2021).
  • Re-signed Trent Williams to a six-year deal worth up to $138 million.
  • Re-signed Juszczyk to a five-year contract worth up to $27 million.
  • Re-signed cornerback Jason Verrett to a one-year deal worth $5.5 million.
  • Signed free agent linebacker Samson Ebukam to a two-year deal worth $12 million.
  • Re-signed Moseley to a two-year deal worth $9.3 million. (per Spotrac)
  • Restructured pass-rusher Dee Ford’s contract. The move saved just over $9 million per Over the Cap.
  • Restructured injured center Weston Richburg’s contract and saved $6.8 million in cap space. In addition, Richburg announced his retirement due to injuries.
  • Agreed to a one-year deal with ERFA offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill.
  • Released defensive lineman Ronald Blair.
  • Signed tight end Ross Dwelley and safety Marcell Harris to one-year deals.
  • Declined to the 2021 option for linebacker Mark Nzeocha.
  • Re-signed depth receiver River Cracraft to a one-year contract.
  • Re-signed long snapper Taybor Pepper to a two-year deal.
  • Re-signed running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to a one-year contract.
  • Re-signed EFRA cornerback Ken. Webster to a one-year deal.

Players San Francisco lost in free agency:

  • Veteran Richard Sherman is dealing with some legal issues and likely won’t be back with the Niners next season.
  • Wide receiver Trent Taylor signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • Quarterback Nick Mullens signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne signed with the New England Patriots.
  • Defensive lineman Solomon Thomas signed with the Las Vegas Raiders.
  • Quarterback C.J. Beathard signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  • Running back Tevin Coleman signed with the New York Jets.
  • Defensive lineman Kerry Hyder signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
  • Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

It looks like Lynch and Shanahan want to run it back after the injury-riddled 2020 campaign. San Francisco signed many players to one-year contracts and will have some flexibility next offseason, especially with Garoppolo’s contract likely coming off the books.

Lynch and Shanahan have another lucrative extension on the horizon. The 49ers will have to back up the Brinks truck to re-sign Nick Bosa next offseason.
