Christian McCaffrey, on the other hand, is as ‘healthy as can be.’
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a couple of injury updates as the team’s OTA practices are underway.
Left tackle Trent Williams hasn’t been at the voluntary sessions during the past couple of weeks. Shanahan said Williams showed up when they initially started and expects to see Williams “soon” when the mandatory minicamp takes place in two weeks. Interestingly enough, Spencer Burford was getting some run at left tackle with Williams out.
Ricky Pearsall tweaked his hamstring. Shanahan said Pearsall likely won’t take part in OTAs or practice in full until training camp begins. Shanahan said he’d be “surprised” if Pearsall participates since there are only two days left, and there’s no sense in throwing Pearsall out there.
Jauan Jennings, Demarcus Robinson, and Jacob Cowing were the three top wideouts, with Pearsall sidelined and Brandon Aiyuk out.
Christian McCaffrey is “as healthy as can be” right now, per Shanahan. Shanahan also mentioned that the team needs to “protect him from himself” since McCaffrey is healthy enough to do everything.
Rookie Alfred Collins was working on the side of the field with the 49ers training staff. Collins has a calf injury. Rookie Marques Sigle was not present, but the reason for his absence is unknown. A host of players were not on hand at practice:
Trent Williams
Ricky Pearsall
Ji’Ayir Brown
Yetur Gross-Matos
Alfred Collins
Marques Sigle
Brown had a procedure on his ankle and won’t be ready until training camp, per Shanahan. That explains the multiple signings at safety this offseason. With Brown and Malik Mustapha out at safety, Richie Grant and Jason Pinnock worked with the first team.
At linebacker, since Fred Warner wasn’t doing team activities, Tatum Bethune, Dee Winters, and Luke Gifford saw action at linebacker.
Gross-Matos wasn’t practicing because he had a baby on the way.
