Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a pretty brutal performance at the San Francisco 49ers‘ practice on Saturday.
Garoppolo reportedly completed 10 of his 15 pass attempts during Saturday’s practice. Don’t be fooled, though. Two of his five incompletions were interceptions by the 49ers defense.
49ers QBs…
Jimmy Garoppolo: 10-15, 2 INT
Trey Lance: 7-14, 5 runs, fumbled handoff
Rosen: 2-3
Sudfeld: 6-6Will be interesting to hear how purposefully Shanahan incorporated Lance runs. Garoppolo’s 2 INTs came on a slant and a long pass. Made several good intermediate throws

On one of the interceptions, Garoppolo tried to complete a deep downfield shot to Deebo Samuel. The ball was underthrown miserably and picked off by a San Francisco defender. Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee even went as far to call the throw a “wobbler.”
It sounds like it was a pretty miserable practice from the 29-year-old.
“And Garoppolo just threw another INT,” Biderman said on Twitter. “This one to Jason Verrett on a deep pass to Deebo Samuel. He double clutched and threw a wobbler. Way under thrown.”

Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t doing the best job holding off rookie Trey Lance. No matter how you spin it, the two are engaged in one of the more intriguing quarterback battles in the NFL this offseason.
Lance wasn’t perfect either on Saturday. He completed just half his attempts and fumbled the ball during a handoff exchange. Those types of mistakes are expected by rookies, though. You can’t excuse Garoppolo’s mistakes, on the other hand.
One interesting report that came out of the 49ers’ Saturday practice was how Lance was utilized in the running game. David Lombardi of The Athletic counted “at least” five runs, two of which were designed, by Lance during the practice.
That just goes to show how Kyle Shanahan intends to use the rookie in coming years.
At least 5 runs for Trey Lance today and at least 2 of those appeared designed. I’ve covered the 49ers since Shanahan took over and I’ve never seen that much QB running action in practice

Don’t rush to any conclusions about the 49ers’ quarterback competition just yet. It’s early. Mistakes happen all the time at this point in training camp.
Jimmy Garoppolo can’t afford many more if he wants to hold off Trey Lance, though.
