John Lynch Comments On The Fred Warner Decision

July 23, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch speaking to the media.

The San Fransisco 49ers inked a massive contract extension with linebacker Fred Warner on Thursday, locking up their defensive leader for the foreseeable future.

The first-team All-Pro is fresh off the best season of his career in 2020 and was paid appropriately. Warner and the 49ers agreed to a $95 million extension, with $40.5 million guaranteed.

San Fransisco general manager John Lynch, who drafted the linebacker with the 70th overall pick in 2018, was among those thrilled to lock down one of the team’s top defenders.

“We’re extremely excited to have completed a long-term contract extension with Fred prior to the start of training camp,” Lynch said in a statement. “Fred brings the type of leadership and energy every day that our defense and team feeds off. He earned this extension through hard work, discipline, and the professional way he goes about his business. We look forward to watching him continue to play at an elite level for us well into the future. Now it’s time to go to work.”

Almost immediately after the news broke, Warner took to Twitter to celebrate his new deal. Not only did he sound excited about the huge pay day, but he also seemed thrilled to stay with the 49ers.

“Wow. Honored and blessed to remain Faithful for years to come!! Thank you to Jed, John, Paraag, Kyle and everyone for believing in me and allowing me this opportunity. I thank EVERYONE who’s helped bring me to this point in my career. We’re only getting started…. Go Niners,” Warner said on Twitter.

Warner will be one of the major pieces of the 49ers star-studded front seven in 2021. After racking up 125 tackles and coming up with four turnovers last season, the 24-year-old is poised for another massive year in San Fransisco.
