The San Francisco 49ers are making it clear – the starting quarterback job is Jimmy Garoppolo’s to lose.
Despite drafting Trey Lance with one of the top picks in the 2021 NFL Draft, the NFC West franchise remains committed to Garoppolo – for now, anyway.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had a telling admission on his veteran quarterback while speaking to Peter King’s Football Morning In America.
“It’s not been as hard as you think,” Shanahan said when asked about not playing Lance. “In this business, if you’re trying to plan out the next six months and say, ‘Where’s it going?’ that’s a mistake. You can’t do it. What I told Jimmy right when we made the trade is, ‘I don’t know any rookie who can come and beat you out if you’re playing at his best self.’ I didn’t necessarily think he was there last year at training camp. Then he had the injuries and stuff. But right now, I see him playing well out here. If he can continue to go that way, that’s great for Trey. That’s great for our team. Then Trey can wait till he’s at his best self, which doesn’t happen overnight.”
Hi all. FMIA is up.
– Rams. In Goff, McVay had a student. In Stafford, he has a peer.
– 49ers. A QB makes the D go “Ooooh.”
– Cowboys. Parsons “needs to play opening day.”
– Raiders. Mayock: “We need to be a playoff team-and beyond.”
– Covid social sniping. “Do NOT do this.” https://t.co/mxvERaii2E— Peter King (@peter_king) August 2, 2021
Lance is seen by many as a longterm play, though most top NFL Draft pick quarterbacks end up playing pretty soon.
How long will Jimmy G. actually keep the job?
