For some reason, there’s still some confusion surrounding who will be the 49ers‘ starting quarterback in Week 1. Regardless, Kyle Shanahan isn’t going to give a clear-cut answer.
Jimmy Garoppolo has been the 49ers’ starting quarterback throughout all of training camp. He started every preseason game, too. Rookie Trey Lance, meanwhile, spent most of training camp with the twos, but did get a few opportunities to play with the ones in a few quarterback-run designed plays.
It’s fairly obvious Shanahan plans to start Garoppolo when the 49ers begin the 2021 season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Detroit Lions. But somehow, it’s still a mystery to some reporters – a mystery that’ll remain until Sept. 12.
Shanahan wasn’t willing to announce the 49ers’ starting quarterback when asked about it as his press conference on Thursday.
“I don’t need to announce the quarterback, I don’t think I need to announce the starting punt returner, either, but I bet you guys can figure it out,” Shanahan said, via Pro Football Talk.

The expectation is that Kyle Shanahan will play both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance this upcoming season. Garoppolo will most likely get most of the snaps, but Shanahan will make use of Lance’s legs.
The former North Dakota State star is an elite runner. Shanahan specializes in the running game. Don’t be surprised if Lance gets plenty of opportunities in the zone-read rushing scheme, especially near the end-zone.
