The Trey Lance hype coming out of San Francisco 49ers camp is real. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is still penciled in as the starter, though it is hard to ignore how well Lance has reportedly played.
On a daily basis, Lance’s practice numbers have looked incredible. While there is a huge jump up to live games, so far he seems to be everything San Francisco could have hoped for when they went up to No. 3 to take him in the 2021 NFL Draft.
“He’s looked tremendous,” Niners general manager John Lynch said after a practice this week. “He really has. I think what’s been most impressive about Trey, everyone wants to talk about physical traits, but the way he approaches his job, he’s a pro in its truest sense.”
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is holding firm that Garoppolo will likely start this fall. He also let slip that Lance is “going to play,” which has fans very excited. It makes it seem like only a matter of time until he takes over the full-time job.

“It sounds (like a) coach cliche, but the twos in every group are trying to surpass the ones. And I see Trey the same way,” he said today. “I know it’s the quarterback position and everyone’s looking at that, but we’re in a situation where I don’t see them competing.
“Trey’s going to play for us this year. I know you guys are all running to Twitter with that, but situationally he’s going to get plays. That doesn’t mean that he’s going to start or anything, but he’s going to get plays. You have to prepare him for that every way possible.
Kyle Shanahan said he plans to give Trey Lance reps with the ones:

Jimmy Garoppolo is a pretty standard pocket passer while Lance brings a ton of athleticism, especially as a runner near the goal line. It wouldn’t surprise to see the rookie get some opportunities there, where his ability to run and throw becomes very dangerous for opposing defenses.
Right now, Shanahan and his staff may be playing it safe, but if Trey Lance is the clear best quarterback, the talent will win out sooner rather than later.
