The San Francisco 49ers‘ quarterback competition between veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance isn’t much of a competition at all to start training camp. Kyle Shanahan said as much during a press conference on Tuesday.
Shanahan called Garoppolo the “best quarterback in the building right now” on Tuesday. Key words: “right now.” The 49ers head coach is leaving the door open for Lance to impress during training camp.

Shanahan doubled down on his commitment to Garoppolo just moments later. He confirmed there’s “no open competition” at quarterback for the 49ers right now. Garoppolo’s the starter until proven otherwise.
“There’s no open competition right now,” Kyle Shanahan confirms. Jimmy Garoppolo is the 49ers’ QB1. Trey Lance is competing for QB2

This isn’t all too surprising. The 49ers didn’t draft Trey Lance because Jimmy Garoppolo’s a bad quarterback. Argue it all you want, but Garoppolo led San Francisco to the Super Bowl just two years ago.
The real issue surrounding Jimmy G is his inability to stay healthy throughout a season. When healthy, he’s more than capable of running Kyle Shanahan’s complicated offense. And yes, he may be more of a game-manager than play-maker, but it worked for the 49ers just two seasons ago.
Lance does bring something new to the table, though. The former North Dakota State star is an elite runner. Shanahan should find a role for him in the 49ers offense this upcoming season even if he doesn’t get the start at quarterback.
San Francisco begins training camp this Wednesday, July 28. This won’t be the last we hear about the 49ers’ quarterback competition, even if Shanahan wants to overshadow it.
