The 49ers aren’t taking any chances in their second preseason game against the Chargers. They’ll rest a slew of starters, and hold out a number of players working through injuries as they draw closer to Week 1 of the regular season.
San Francisco has to stay healthy this year if they’re going to have any shot of going on a deep playoff run, so it makes sense that they’d keep key players out and take injury returns slowly. Their goal is to get and stay healthy for the games that count.
Starters that do participate against the Chargers may see a little more playing time than they did in the preseason opener, but it’s clear that even a truncated preseason won’t change how the 49ers coaching staff will handle the exhibition contests.
