Well that didn’t take nearly as long as we thought it would. Less than one half into the start of the San Francisco 49ers’ season and rookie quarterback Trey Lance has already been brought onto the field – and made an impact.
In the first quarter of today’s game against the Detroit Lions, the 49ers got into the redzone on their second drive. On first down at the Lions’ 5-yard line, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan decided to change things up, yanking starter Jimmy Garoppolo and putting Trey Lance in for the play.
Lance took the ball for a pass and found Trent Sherfield for a touchdown. It was his first NFL pass.
Unsurprisingly, the NFL world reacted quickly to the turn of events in San Francisco. Some are already asking why the 49ers didn’t just start Lance from the get-go.
Others believe this may mark the beginning of the end for Garoppolo as a starter:

The San Francisco 49ers moved heaven and earth to trade up and select Trey Lance No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. But despite that huge investment, they decided to make him the backup to start the season.
It was only one play, but one that could be a sign of things to come as the 49ers try to reestablish their offense as one of the elite.
Will we see more of Trey Lance as the game progresses?
The 49ers-Lions game is being played on FOX. The teams are tied 7-7 with 13:29 remaining in the second quarter.
