It’s rare to get a relatively notable free agency signing on the eve of the NFL’s regular season, but that’s what we have on Sunday night.
According to longtime NFL insider Jay Glazer, the San Francisco 49ers have made a notable addition to their secondary.
Veteran NFL cornerback Josh Norman, a first-team All-Pro with the Panthers in 2015, has agreed to terms with the 49ers.
Norman spent the 2020 season with the Buffalo Bills. He played on a one-year contract and entered free agency in 2021. Norman had gone unsigned up until now.

NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo has some details on the signing. Norman is reportedly getting up to $2.5 million from San Francisco.
Josh Norman can earn up to $2.5 million on this deal with the #49ers, source says. Had other interest as well. Gets a deal with a base value above the minimum. https://t.co/p4Ah8BC4fN

Despite lasting in free agency for longer than expected, Norman was actually pretty productive in Buffalo in 2020. Pro Football Focus ranked him the 17th best cornerback in the league in 2020.

49ers insider David Lombardi reacted to the news on Sunday night.
“Josh Norman is 33 and will be 34 this season, but I figure he’ll take the spot of Dontae Johnson on the 53-man roster as vet CB depth,” he tweeted.
Interesting. Josh Norman is 33 and will be 34 this season, but I figure he’ll take the spot of Dontae Johnson on the 53-man roster as vet CB depth (unless there’s an injury we don’t know about) https://t.co/82Rk5wH99h

You never know what kind of injuries you’ll sustain, though, so perhaps Norman will have a bigger role than expected in 2021.
The 49ers open their 2021 season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Lions.
