Injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 49ers to dip into their practice squad more often than they might’ve liked. This season they’ll aim for fewer injuries and with that, less practice squad use.
Still, that group of 16 players is still essential for practices and in the event the 49ers quickly need to add a player who’s been around their facility and knows their system on either side of the ball.
It’s also a good proving ground for young players. A player like JaMycal Hasty cut his teeth on the practice squad before making his way onto the active roster. Former quarterback Nick Mullens did the same before making his way into the backup quarterback role.
The rules for the practice squad are a bit different in the COVID-19 era. The practice squad roster jumped to 16 players. Teams are able to protect up to four players each week from getting signed to another team’s practice squad. They can also have six players with more than two accrued NFL seasons.
With that in mind, here’s our guess at what 49ers might return to the practice squad after Tuesday’s roster cuts:
