Ravens, Chargers May Sign 22-Sack Free Agent After Seahawks Visit

The Ravens, Chargers may sign 22-sack free-agent linebacker Randy Gregory after visiting with the Seahawks. According to multiple reports, the problematic edge rusher may look to kick the tires again in the league by signing with Seattle. Gregory went from potentially revitalizing his career with the Buccaneers to getting no interest from any teams since failing to report to Tampa Bay. However, the Seahawks are desperate to improve the pass-rushing unit since losing the last four out of five matchups.

Originally selected in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, Gregory’s career has been a spiral while not living up to his expectations. His breakout year comes from 2018, when he recorded six sacks but other than that, he hasn’t been attracting much interest from teams. Gregory has been a distraction for rosters, especially for the Cowboys after getting multiple suspensions. He was aiming to get a shot with the 49ers but didn’t live up to the hype after not recording one single sack.

Gregory may be a gamble now but at the right price, any team could bring him in for an opportunity. He probably won’t cost much like any other potential defensive trade candidates out there like Demario Davis, Za’Darius Smith and Chase Young. It might be better for the Ravens or Chargers to make this rental investment to bolster the pass rush since trading requires giving away some of their draft capital.

Super Team Help

The Ravens probably have one of the best teams in the league after acquiring Diontae Johnson in a trade. Lamar Jackson may have weapons to win football games in the passing attack but dealing with an injury may cause some inconsistency issues for him. Baltimore will probably have to depend heavily on the run game and winning matchups in the trenches with their defense. However, after losing Patrick Queen and Jadeveon Clowney this past offseason, the Ravens’ defense has been nothing but average despite Kyle Van Noy and Roquan Smith holding it down.

David Ojabo and Odafe Oweh are struggling to keep a balance but no fault of their own since they’re inexperienced starters. Randy Gregory is probably the last person on Baltimore’s mind but taking a swing on him on a one-year deal until the postseason. It may be worth the headache since ball games can’t be won when shootouts happen so adding a veteran rental like him might make sense. Gregory may not be the same player anymore but he could be a useful rotational pass rusher rather than Baltimore spending big-time money on a trade candidate.

Winning in the Trenches

Los Angeles hasn’t been the best in tackling this season, especially with the run game being nothing but a failure. Jim Harbaugh was hoping to establish a team that wins football games on the ground. However, the experiment looks like a drought but they could gamble on Gregory. He isn’t the final solution for the team’s defensive woes but it should be some sigh of relief for star defenders like Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack.

The Chargers have one of the worst wide receiving rooms in the league and have yet to trade for any talent. They might as well start signing rental veterans to help bolster the defense to give Justin Herbert extra time on the field. Gregory doesn’t need to be a full-time starter but enough to get after the quarterback. He probably put up big numbers but it’s better than doing nothing at all.
