With Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall set to begin training camp on the Active/PUP list, the 49ers worked out former Miami Dolphins WR Grant DuBose and Green Bay Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown
Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reported that the San Francisco 49ers worked out former Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers wide receiver Grant DuBose, who spent his collegiate years playing for the Charlotte 49ers. According to Ari Meirov, the 49ers also worked out Equanimeous St. Brown.
The 49ers will need practice bodies while Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall begin training camp on the Active/PUP List. The active depth chart includes Jauan Jennings, Jacob Cowing, Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins, and Junior Bergen.
DuBose was a seventh-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He’s 6’2”, 201 pounds. DuBose ran a 4.57 40-yard dash coming out of college. During the 2023 preseason, DuBose played 56 total snaps, with 38 of those coming out wide at receiver compared to ten in the slot. DuBose caught three of his five receptions for 35 yards in the preseason, but did not take a single snap during the regular season with Green Bay.
DuBose saw his snap count double with Miami during the 2024 preseason. Out of 115 snaps, he played 61 snaps out wide and 35 in the slot. He appeared in three games last season with the Dolphins, where he caught two of his four targets for 11 yards.
St. Brown was drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame by the Packers. He’s never had more than 21 receptions in a season, but obviously comes with more experience than DuBose. St. Brown had 21 receptions as a rookie with Green Bay, and then again in 2022 with the Chicago Bears.
St. Brown is a 6’5” wideout who ran fast out of Notre Dame. One of his best qualities during St. Brown’s pro career has been his run blocking. However, it’s been since Justin Fields was in his second season that St. Brown was productive as a receiver. St. Brown signed with the Saints in April 2024, but didn’t make New Orleans’s initial 53-man roster.
Kyle’s update, 3:21 p.m.: The 49ers had tryouts with six wide receivers in total, per Matt Maiocco:
St. Brown
DuBose
Quintez Cephus
Ramel Keyton
Stanley Morgan
Brandon Powell
Cephus was a 5th-round pick in 2020 out of Wisconsin by the Detroit Lions. The 6’1, 210-pound wideout caught 20 passes as a rookie, then 15 passes in 2021, but has no statistics since 2022, where Cephus had two receptions after sustaining a season-ending foot injury in December.
Cepphus was a part of a gambling violation back in April of 2023, which caused Detroit to release him. He’s bounced around since then, from Buffalo to Houston, before signing with the Rams. The Los Angeles Rams waived Cephus in late June after spending last season on their practice squad.
Keyton, a 6’3”, 197-pound wide receiver, was undrafted in 2024 out of Tennessee. He caught one pass with the Las Vegas Raiders last season.
Morgan was an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska back in 2019. He was with the Bengals from 2019-2023. However, Morgan has only five receptions for 29 yards in his career.
Powell might be the most interesting player on this list. In 2022, Powell had 24 receptions and 156 yards with the Rams. In 2023, he had five more receptions but doubled his receiving yards at 324, averaging 24.9 yards per reception. He was a big play threat under Kevin O’Connell. He also has experience as a punt and kick returner.
