The San Francisco 49ers are signing RB Ameer Abdullah and WR Andy Isabella as they are thin at both spots.
The San Francisco 49ers worked out four running backs on Wednesday and a trio of wide receivers. Per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, those wideouts were Marquez Callaway, Andy Isabella, and Cornell Powell. There was a quarterback who worked out as well, but the assumption is that Carter Bradley was the one throwing the wide receivers the ball.
Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported that the 49ers are signing Isabella and Abdullah, although nothing is official yet. Isabella, a former late second-rounder in 2019 out of UMass, spent his first three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He has also been on the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills, before not signing with any team in 2025. Isabella has 33 career receptions for 447 yards.
Why a wide receiver? The 49ers have been giving Ricky Pearsall days off, are still without Jacob Cowing for another couple of weeks, and are still without Brandon Aiyuk. It might not be good news for Equanimeous St. Brown, who may not be able to run the full route tree, hence, the need for 5’9, 188-pound Isabella, who is likely still a camp body.
Abdullah spent the last three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows tweeted that Jordan James didn’t suffer a serious injury. Still, with Israel Abanikanda being cut and Christian McCaffrey on a similar rest plan, there’s a need for more running back bodies in camp.
