49ers rookie LB Nick Martin suffered a broken thumb while he was lifting weights, but he won’t miss substantial time.
Offseason injuries are nothing new for the San Francisco 49ers under Kyle Shanahan. This team has had some bizarre injuries that read more like a parody than anything, as they’ve occurred when the Niners weren’t playing football.
Well, another injury happened, according to All-Pro Trent Williams, during his praise for the 49ers’ rookie third-rounder. Williams said, “Shout out to Nick Martin, my new teammate. An East Texas boy from Texarkana, already out there making plays. I can’t wait to see him, can’t wait to see his success in the NFL. He’s going to be a great player.”
Williams revealed an injury that was later confirmed by Noah Furtado of The San Francisco Chronicle, who reported that 49ers rookie linebacker Nick Martin recently suffered a fractured thumb while lifting weights.
According to Furtado, Martin will not require surgery and is not expected to miss any portions of training camp. So, crisis averted. Martin is expected to push Dee Winters as a starter next to Fred Warner.
Depending on personnel, the 49ers are fast enough at linebacker to play three on the field at the same time. So, reps are imperative for Martin for multiple reasons. The coaching staff needs to see what he can do once the pads are on. They also need to see that Martin can be reliable and stay off the injury report — an issue for Winters in 2024.
