The Athletic’s Dianni Russini believes Brock Purdy showing up to OTAs is a promising sign for contract negotiations
It seems like we get a random player’s opinion about whether San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy is worth a $50 million extension once a week. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on her Scoop City podcast, we’ll find out if that’s the case as Russini believes the Niners and Purdy could be getting closer to making a deal:
“I think there’s some talk out there that they’re far apart on this and that this is going to take a while. I don’t get that sense. The sense that I’m getting is that they’re closer than what we think. I don’t believe Brock Purdy shows up for OTAs if he doesn’t feel good that they’re near a number that he’s happy with. That’s how it usually works with players.
Very rarely are guys showing up if they’re that far apart. To me, that action alone tells me they’re close, but also, doing some digging on it, I think this is still moving in a really good direction. I don’t think there should be any concern.”
It would have been a bad look if the quarterback returning from a team that had been making perennial playoff runs failed to show up to OTAs over a contract dispute. Purdy hasn’t had the luxury of participating in every OTA practice during his career due to an offseason injury one year. Plus, San Francisco is coming off a 6-win season. Even Nick Bosa showed up.
That could also be one of the reasons Russini lists both parties as closer than some are anticipating. Regardless, there seems little reason to worry about Purdy’s future or stability and that a deal will get done sooner rather than later.
