The 49ers are set to take on the Raiders for one joint practice ahead of their matchup in the preseason
The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, formerly covering the Las Vegas Raiders and now the San Francisco 49ers, tweeted on Monday that both teams are expected to have a one-day joint practice during training camp.
The preseason game is set for August 16 at 1 p.m. PT. According to Tafur, the one-day joint practice will occur two days before, on the 14th.
Raiders head coach Pete Carroll has long been against joint practices. He said he doesn’t do them. That was also in Seattle. Could the 73-year-old be turning over a new leaf in his new surroundings?
The game takes place in Las Vegas, so the 49ers would presumably spend the majority of the week in the desert. If San Francisco did agree to the joint practice, it would mean we’re unlikely to see the starters play much, if at all, in the preseason game a couple of days later.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been adamant about getting more out of these joint practices since they are in controlled settings. Coaches will yell at players for taking the opponent to the ground.
One of the reasons Shanahan and the 49ers might’ve agreed to have a joint practice is because the Raiders have an indoor facility. Practicing against a different colored jersey indoors sure beats going against the same player/scheme you have for three weeks in the summer heat of Santa Clara.
This training camp should be productive for the Niners. We’ll have joint practices in back-to-back weeks, as the Niners will scrimmage the Denver Broncos one week before the Raiders.
