The Washington Commanders have a general manager who is quite familiar with the 49ers roster. However, the 49ers did not want the recently traded Jahan Dotson in return
The San Francisco 49ers have yet to trade Brandon Aiyuk. He was at the team’s preseason finale in Las Vegas on Friday, which is a sign that Aiyuk’s alleged back injury has healed since he took a flight to his home state.
Aiyuk has been involved in numerous trade conversations during the offseason, and those have heated up since the start of August. While nothing has come to fruition, the Washington Commanders were the most recent team that was reportedly interested in acquiring the star wideout.
Adam Peters left San Francisco this past offseason after serving as the 49ers assistant general manager under John Lynch. Peters took the Commanders’ job as general manager. According to a recent report, Peters had his eyes on acquiring Aiyuk.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Mike Silver recently tweeted not to rule out Washington. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Here’s what Ari Meriov said on his podcast Friday morning:
“There was a point a few weeks ago where the 49ers were looking to trade Brandon Aiyuk, where they did call Washington because Aiyuk wanted to go there and be with Jayden Daniels.
Those talks didn’t go anywhere, simply because A) They were not going to trade [Terry] McLaurin to San Francisco, and the 49ers did not want [Jahan] Dotson. And then number three, if there were no receivers going back, the 49ers wanted a first round pick, which their GM Adam Peters said is a non-starter, it’s not happening.
That’s why Washington has not been involved in the Aiyuk sweepstakes, even though he wants to go there.”
If you’re the 49ers, accepting anything less than a WR1 or a first-round pick in return is bad business. If anything, you should overask, as you hold all of the leverage in any potential trade since Aiyuk is under contract for another season.
