The San Francisco 49ers are continuing to tweak their roster ahead of their upcoming preseason games. Unfortunately, those roster tweaks have now spelled the end for one former top-10 pick.
On Wednesday, the 49ers released wide receiver Kevin White, the former No. 7 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was released in order to make room for linebacker Donald Payne.
White’s release ends a one-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers that saw him on and off the roster throughout the 2020 season. He got 31 snaps last year and did not make a play on either offense or special teams.
White has just six receptions in the last four seasons – two in 2017 and four in 2018. He missed the entirety of the 2019 season after being cut from the Arizona Cardinals in preseason that year.
The #49ers signed LB Donald Payne to a one-year deal. In order to make room on the roster, the team has released WR Kevin White.

Coming out of West Virginia in 2015, Kevin White was considered one of the top receivers in the country along with Amari Cooper. But a series of injuries in training camp kept him off the field for his entire rookie season.
White played in four games in 2016, but then another injury abruptly ended his season with 19 receptions for 187 yards. More injuries limited him to one game in 2016.
In 2017, White played in nine games and had a notable catch against the New England Patriots. He caught a 54-yard Hail Mary pass, but came up one yard short of a potential game-tying score.
With all of the accumulated injuries and lack of playing time, White’s NFL career may be on life support at this point.
