San Francisco 49ers Reportedly Sign Veteran Corner

August 4, 2021 by The Spun

San Francisco 49ers helmet sits on the turf.

The San Francisco 49ers made a much-needed addition to their 2021 secondary unit on Tuesday night, signing veteran cornerback B.W. Webb, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

This will be Webb’s seventh team in seven years.

After serving as a backup corner for Dallas, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and New Orleans through his first four years in the league, Webb finally saw significant time on the field for the New York Giants in 2018. Through 16 games and 13 starts, the former fourth-round pick logged a career-high 59 tackles, one interception and six passes defended.

Webb started 12 games for Cincinnati in 2020, notching 37 tackles, one interception and seven passes defended.

The Niners needed to add something on the secondary depth chart, especially with two injury-prone starters set to take the field in 2021.

Former Pro Bowler Jason Verrett missed just two games this past season with a pulled hamstring, but before that, the injury bug plagued the veteran corner for years. From 2016-19, Verrett saw time in just six NFL contests due to various injury issues.

Starting on the other side of the field is veteran CB K’Waun Williams, who started just four games in 2020 due to a nagging ankle injury.

Behind those two starters are an inexperienced pair of corner options: second-year man Tim Harris Jr. and No. 102 overall selection Ambry Thomas. Together, they have just two NFL appearances and zero recorded stats.

Cornerback superstar Richard Sherman, who wasn’t expected to re-sign with the team anyway, definitely won’t be returning now following his recent legal troubles.

San Francisco had the fourth-best pass defense in the league last year, allowing an average of 207.9 yards per game.
