SB Nation reacts: 54% of 49ers fans think Jimmy Garoppolo can sustain his success

After an inconsistent few games, fans want to see Garoppolo do it against a divisional foe

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Each week, we send out questions to the most plugged-in 49ers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to join Reacts and to have YOUR VOICE HEARD by SB Nation and 49ers fans alike.

After losing four games in a row, 49ers fans’ confidence in the team was down in the dumps as the number dropped from 53% to 27%. Oh, how winning can solve everything. The mood after the game was night and day. The players and coaches were loose, talkative, and chipper. It was a far cry from the team that’s been dejected and at a loss for answers after the Colts game. After beating the Bears, our confidence number is up to 65%.

I’ll be curious to see that number next week as there’s bound to be an overreaction in either direction.

Arizona is limping into Santa Clara this afternoon. Nobody is going to feel sorry for Arizona, 7-1, if they lose to the 49ers — who have been one of if not the most injured teams in the NFL during the past few seasons.

Speaking of the rest of the NFC West, the Seahawks‘ confidence was as low as 4% last week. However, they are up to 33% as Week 9 is underway. The Rams have been flying high all season, and that number is now a perfect 100% after it was only 95% last week. Arizona switched spots with the Rams as they are 95% after being 100% last week.

Our national question asked whether Jimmy Garoppolo can keep up his lights out performance from Week 8 moving forward:

You can be encouraged by Garoppolo’s Week 8 performance and still want to see him do it again. Unfortunately, one strong outing against a lowly Chicago team doesn’t erase a few lackluster performances.

Chicago didn’t have a pass rush. That allowed Jimmy to be aggressive (9.3 intended air yards) all game. The return of Trent Williams, involving Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel looking like a superstar all helped the offense get back on track.

Garoppolo will have to beat the blitz today as Arizona has the eighth highest blitz rate. But, for all of his faults, that’s been Jimmy’s strong suit all season. He doesn’t flinch under pressure, hangs in there, and allows his receivers to make a play.

Before Week 8, Garoppolo had an 82% adjusted accuracy with a 122 passer rating against the blitz. Assuming the running game remains on track against an Arizona defense that has given up their fair share of explosive running plays, I expect Garoppolo to pick up where he left off through the air — at least for another week.
