Garoppolo meets the media for the first time this training camp
While 49ers fans may be split as to who they want to be the starting quarterback, it doesn’t sound like that same schism will exist inside San Francisco’s quarterback room this season.
In his first press conference of training camp, Jimmy Garoppolo gave a pretty candid answer when he was asked whether he’d ever hold anything back in terms of mentoring the guy who is being set up to take his job:
“Honestly I try not to put too much thought into that. Like the specifics of it. I think that stuff just comes naturally. And it’s not like I would ever hold something away from him. You know, I don’t want to tell him this type of thing. It’s just, when you let it happen organically, and that’s what kind of we’ve done. I think that’s when it’s at its most natural and you can really build a normal relationship between two people. And so it’s yeah, I wouldn’t want to, I don’t want to draw a line anywhere or anything like that, but anything he needs, I’m willing to help him. I think Nate and Josh are the same way. We’ve got good group, good room right now in the QBs and it’s fun to be around.”
Regardless of your personal feelings about Jimmy G., you can’t expect him to go out of his way to help Trey Lance become a better starting quarterback – yet it sounds like that’s exactly what he’s willing to do if and when the situation calls for it.
That kind of camaraderie is a credit to both Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan, who continues to foster an incredible culture inside 4949 Marie P. DeBartolo Way despite multiple ten-loss seasons.
