He should be back Monday…unless he isn’t
Trey Lance practiced yesterday with a wrap on his finger and nary a football in sight. After that practice, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch both updated his status.
Let’s start with Lynch, who spoke first:
“I think it’s trending in the right direction. Some of the swelling’s coming down. Monday is kind of the optimistic look at it and I can promise you this, we’ll do right by Trey and have him in a good place before he’s back out there. But we certainly would love to have him available on Monday. I can promise you this with Trey as well, he does everything he can to get well and he’s working hard at that right now.”
Shanahan came next and was specifically asked if the injury is something that could linger into the season:
“Any time you’ve got a small chip, it could linger. I hope it doesn’t. I’m hoping he’s back there next Monday. That’s the goal. He seems positive about it, but we’ve got to be smart with it, too. Sometimes when it’s a real little thing like that it’s hard to believe it’s still hurt, but we’ve got to make sure that he doesn’t go out there and have a setback right away on it, too.”
Kyle also said it’s too early to start game-planning for the Lions, so the uncertainly with Lance’s status hasn’t impacted the game plan yet.
If Lance can’t play or the 49ers want to be extra cautious with him in Week 1, Nate Sudfeld would be activated from the practice squad to take his place behind Jimmy Garoppolo.
