The Niners continue to promote from within in the front ofcie.
The San Francisco 49ers announced several promotions in their front office on Thursday, naming a Vice President of Player Personnel, as well as two new Assistant General Managers.
Tariq Ahmad was promoted from Director to Vice President of Player Personnel, marking the second straight year he earned a promotion in the organization. He finished his 11th year with the 49ers this season, and was in his first year as the Director of Player Personnel after being the Director of Scouting for the three years prior.
Here’s what the 49ers said about his role:
“In his role, Ahmad manages the daily operations of the college scouting department and their evaluations of players among colleges to help prepare for the Draft and free agency.”
He wasn’t the only major promotion, as San Francisco gave R.J. Gillen and Brian Hampton Assistant General Manager titles.
Gillen was a co-Director of Player Personnel with Ahmad, also being promoted last offseason, and just finished his 10th season with the 49ers. Here’s what the 49ers said about his role:
“In his role, Gillen manages the daily operations of the pro scouting department and their evaluations of players among the various professional leagues to help prepare the club for acquisitions through free agency, trades and the daily player transactional movement. Gillen also assists the coaching staff through his advance scouting.”
Hampton, on the other hand, was the Vice President of Football Administration previously. He had been in that role for five years after 10 years as the Director of Football Administration and Analytics. Hampton has been with the team for 21 seasons after originally joining as a football operations intern in late 2003. Here’s what the 49ers said about his role:
“In his role, Hampton is responsible for roster construction strategy, contract negotiations, strategic planning and management of the club’s player compensation budget and salary cap.”
The other manager front office move was the promotion of Matt Ploenzke from Director of Football R&D to Vice President of Football R&D. Ploenzke has been with the 49ers for the past six years. Here’s what the 49ers had to say about his role:
“In his current role, Ploenzke oversees the research strategies for the personnel department and advises on the methodological approaches undertaken. His primary responsibilities involve developing player valuation metrics using advanced statistical techniques and providing interpretations of these metrics to aid in roster acquisitions.”
San Francisco also made several other promotions and hires. Here’s the full rundown:
Jordan Fox was promoted from Player Personnel Analyst to Player Personnel Scout. He’s entering his second year with the 49ers.
Benjamin Klein has been hired as an R&D performance analyst. He was previously with the Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball program, along with stops with Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati, the Chicago Bulls, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Jason Kwon has been promoted from Scouting Assistant to Area Scout. 2025 will be his fourth year with the 49ers.
