San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left last week’s game with a calf injury. It appears the ailment will keep him out of action this Sunday.
Garoppolo was not at practice this afternoon when it was open to the media, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. This news comes after Garoppolo missed practice yesterday.
As of now, it looks like it will be rookie Trey Lance making his first career start this weekend against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals.

Garoppolo has passed for 925 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions in three-and-a-half games this season. Unfortunately, he’s now dealing with an injury, an all-too-common occurrence throughout his career.
Lance, who would take over in Garoppolo’s place, completed 9-of-18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 41 yards on seven carries in last week’s loss to Seattle.
“When thrown into the battle here, he [Lance] got more comfortable as the game went, especially going home and watching the tape after, there was encouraging stuff,” Shanahan said of the No. 3 overall pick, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. “He’ll see some things out there that he’s never seen. But what you like about him and stuff he might not be ready for, he can overcompensate with his athletic ability and how competitive he is, and how good of a football player he is.”
