It’s time to ramp up the Trey Lance hype machine. The rookie quarterback reportedly got one first-team rep and took advantage of the opportunity during the 49ers‘ practice on Tuesday.
Kyle Shanahan has said multiple times already this training camp that Jimmy Garoppolo will get all of the 49ers’ first-team reps. He either had a change of heart or is playing mind games with Lance or the rest of us, because Lance played with the first team on Tuesday.
Lance got one, yes one, rep with the 49ers’ first-team offense on Tuesday. Right after his one rep, he rejoined the second-team offense and made what’s being reported as a video game-like throw.
The rookie quarterback took a snap, rolled to his left, threw across his body while jumping and completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to his crossing receiver. Yeah, this kid is special.
Trey Lance just made a throw I didn’t know humans could actually make. Video game nonsense — step up, roll left, across this body on the jump, 50 yards in the air on a rope into the pocket to a crossing receiver. Touchdown.

After getting one rep with the starters, Trey Lance with the second team threw an absolute dime rolling left for a long touchdown to Trent Sherfield. One of the throws of camp so far. #49ers

Kyle Shanahan may want to start giving Trey Lance more first-team reps. It’s starting to sound like he’s living up to the hype.
The 49ers are in an interesting position. If Lance is close to Jimmy Garoppolo’s level by the end of training camp, why not give him the start? He’ll eventually be the franchise quarterback.
Making a video game-like throw isn’t as easy in an actual game, though. Lance needs more in-game experience. Luckily the preseason is on its way.
Lance and the 49ers begin their preseason schedule on Aug. 14 when they’ll take on the Kansas City Chiefs. The rookie should get plenty of reps.
