Welcome to the NFL, Trey Lance. It only took a few plays for the San Francisco 49ers rookie to have a head-turning touchdown pass.
Lance makes his preseason debut against the team the Niners lost to in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, the Kansas City Chiefs. Jimmy Garoppolo started the game, but it didn’t take long for Lance to make his first appearance.
Lance was inserted in the second drive, and he didn’t light it up right off the bat. His first attempt was incomplete, and he took a sack on third down to end the drive. On the first play of his second drive, however, he absolutely uncorked one.
Lance sold a play action fake to the right to get the Chiefs’ defense flowing the wrong way, before quickly rolling left. He planted his feet at the Niners’ 13 yard line, and delivered a strike across the field to Trent Sherfield, who hauled it in at the Chiefs’ 43, before taking it all the way for an 80 yard touchdown. Lance’s ball dropped in perfectly over the top of the Chiefs’ secondary. It was truly a thing of beauty.

The hype out of San Francisco 49ers training camp has been immense. While the team insists that the plan is for Garoppolo to start the year, Trey Lance may not give them much of a choice if this is any indication of what he can do.
49ers fans have already made their decision on the matter.

Look at Trey Lance’s eyes on this play.
Knew where he was ending up the whole time so knows there’s no need to stare it down. Awesome stuff. pic.twitter.com/Q5EfVB5k8I

That wasn’t Trey Lance’s only impressive play of the day so far, either. After the Chiefs pinned the 49ers at their one-yard line with a fantastic punt, Lance answered with a 34 yard pass from his own end zone.
The fact that Kyle Shanahan and his staff had enough faith in Lance to call a pass on first down here is impressive enough.

Garoppolo was 3-for-3 for 26 yards in his one drive. Lance is 4-for-6 for 125 yards and a score, and has the Niners up tonight 9-7 in the second quarter.
