Where are the San Francisco 49ers the strongest and deepest on their 2025 roster?
We went over the offensive depth chart Thursday morning. We’ll follow that up with defense and a 53-man projection. That’s because 95 percent of rosters around the league have been shaped. Teams may add a veteran, perhaps a recently released pass rusher, but clubs know who their impact players are at this point in the offseason.
Let’s zoom out and discuss where this roster’s strength lies. For years, it was the defensive line. However, that unit was gutted and rebuilt with youth this offseason after a disappointing campaign from a trio of veterans.
Playoff teams have an identity. You knew where the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills made their money. For the 49ers, it’s long been their pass rush. In 2023, it was an explosive offense.
What will be the Niners’ strength in 2025? That’s today’s question of the day.
What is the 49ers’ biggest strength heading into the regular season?
My answer: This question is much harder than it was in years past. Fred Warner has a new running mate. Nick Bosa’s is 20. Malik Mustapha’s injury dampens the optimism in the secondary. Robert Saleh has his work cut out for him.
On the other side of the ball, any answer will come with a caveat or an asterisk regarding the health of Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, and Brandon Aiyuk.
I’m still going with the skill players. Aiyuk and McCaffrey are the best among their positions. Ricky Pearsall is a first-rounder. He should be heavily involved in his second year after showing promise down the stretch as a rookie. Jauan Jennings proved he can produce consistently. Re-signing Kyle Juszczyk and adding Luke Farrell should mean fewer pass-blocking snaps for the best tight end in football.
Deebo Samuel is gone, but if the 49ers can get anything out of Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing, Samuel’s presence won’t be missed. Plus, Demarcus Robinson is the ideal band-aid at the position while Aiyuk heals. How Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James are used likely depends on McCaffrey’s health.
The depth and different skill set the 49ers can throw on the field would lead you to believe the offense can return to the one that was a nightmare for defenses in 2023. Of course, that’s a high bar to clear, but once Aiyuk returns, the 2025 version of the 49ers offense should be closer to 2023 than 2024.
