What should the 49ers expect from Mykel Williams in 2025?

Instant impact or a developmental season?

When the San Francisco 49ers selected EDGE rusher Mykel Williams from Georgia with their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the fit and potential for the rookie have been imagined by fans, analysts, and the 49ers themselves. John Lynch spoke openly about a player who can set the edge, and the selection of Williams is right in line with that philosophy. Given the draft pick in tandem with Robert Saleh’s return and the other defensive line selections in the draft, the future for the 49ers’ defensive line is clear.

Making the leap from college to the NFL is tough for any rookie, regardless of draft status or capital invested. Williams, in particular, has concerns about being a more raw prospect coming out of college than other prospects. The physical skill and upside are evident. Unlocking that potential is in the hands of Saleh and Kris Kocurek.

Early reviews of Williams from rookie minicamp and OTAs have been largely positive. If all goes according to plan, Williams will open the season as the starter opposite Nick Bosa, and more than likely will be asked to kick inside to allow Bryce Huff to hunt on obvious passing downs.

But what should the realistic expectations be for the first-round rookie?

Naturally, there will be some bumps and bruises along with some highlight plays and optimism for the future. Make no mistake, Williams MUST develop into a cornerstone member of the 49ers’ defensive line. However, there has to be a give and take on what to expect.

As long as the development is constant from week to week, it is hard to be disappointed with the results. While it is completely possible (no harm in being hopeful) that Williams wrecks shop from day one, that type of expectation will only kill the realistic perspective of the player and his progress.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report believes Williams will be the biggest bust for the 49ers in 2025.

San Francisco 49ers rookie pass-rusher Mykel Williams is in a position similar to Ferguson’s. The Georgia product may eventually be an NFL star, but he could easily underwhelm as a rookie.

Williams entered the draft with intriguing physical traits but with limited proven production (14 sacks in three seasons). He may not step into a significant rookie role either, as the 49ers traded for Bryce Huff post-draft to help complement Nick Bosa on the edge.

Most fans expect first-round picks to be instant difference-makers, but Williams may be looking at a developmental year in 2025.

Knox’s assessment is precisely how fans end up disappointed. Huff will not be asked to be on the field for base downs, so that point is wrong, and the idea that Williams will have a tough time seeing the field, given the 49ers’ defensive line depth, would be a complete shock.

Optimism for a rookie’s future is always valid. There is a reason teams select players in the draft. Identifying traits and developing them is a huge part of the draft process for any front office and coaching staff.

Maintaining perspective and prioritizing constant development should be the focus. Patience is often the best approach with rookies. Let their career unfold naturally.
