Who will be the biggest surprise at the 49ers’ training camp?

Which San Francisco 49ers player do you think will surprise people during training camp this year?

Every year, there are a few players on the San Francisco 49ers who turn out to be preseason favorites that fans gravitate toward. Some have no realistic shot at making the roster, while others end up finding their way on the field at some point during the season.

Rookies, undrafted free agents, and lesser-known players often become the most popular.

Sure, arguments about quarterback stats are highly debated topics, but the conversations generally get back to running backs and wide receivers. Some examples of training camp “stars” throughout the years include Chris Conley, Trent Sherfield, JaMycal Hasty, and, of course, Mohamed Sanu.

So who will be this year’s surprise? Today’s question of the day is:

Who will be the biggest surprise at the 49ers’ training camp?

My answer: There’s uncertainty at the typical positions that we mentioned above, opening the door for more than one of the youngsters to take advantage of their opportunities.

The possibility of the 49ers beginning camp without Brandon Aiyuk, a Jauan Jennings holdout, and newcomer Demarcus Robinson facing a possible suspension points me to the wide receiver position.

Ricky Pearsall is expected to be healthy for camp next week, and he’ll get every rep imaginable. To me, the 49ers are looking to fill a specific role—a big-body target who can win 1-on-1 outside of the numbers. The process of elimination leads us to undrafted rookie Isaiah Neyor.

Neyor is 6’4”, 218 pounds, with the athletic baseline that would have most prospects drafted in the first round. Neyor doesn’t need to do anything groundbreaking during camp. If he can take advantage of his athletic advantage, make a few splash plays in 1-on-1s that get the coach’s attention, and be consistent in catching the ball, it shouldn’t be long before Neyor works his way up the depth chart.

Neyor can make a name for himself during joint practices and preseason games. Neyor will go from a true freshman quarterback throwing him the ball to Mac Jones. Jones’s best quality is playing on time and knowing where to go with the football. If Jones trusts Neyor and they build a rapport during camp, Neyor could easily become a fan favorite during August.
