Community pulse: Many aspects of this team surprising fans

Fans are disappointed after 1-2 start

We take on a lot of topics during our weekly Tuesday Community Question.

Sometimes, it’s about team history, sometimes the topic is on the lighter side and sometimes, it’s about what is happening on the field right now.

And that’s what we tackled during this week’s question. It was what is your biggest surprise of the early season?

Of course, a surprise is open ended and it can be either a positive surprise or a negative surprise. Well, this week with the Raiders sitting at 1-2 and coming off an embarrassing 36-22 home defeat at the hands of the lowly Carolina Panthers, the surprises are definitely on the negative side.

Here are some of your responses:

Same problem as last year, lack of overall pass rush, starting with not much inside despite adding Wilkins, and getting Butler and Jenks back. Thought it would be better this year, but early on too. Before this game, Maxx was the pass rush–real pass rush where you actually hit the QB. 7 QB hits and Maxx had 5. 3 sacks and Maxx had all. IDL had 1 QB hit from Butler, that’s it.
The one positive thing about this game, maybe the only thing on defense was others in the front seven got to the QB some, hit the QB. Baby steps when you consider how the game went, but positive to see Wilkins get home with 2 QB hits, and .5 sack. Snowden get a QB hit and the other half. And Wilson actually was fast off the EDGE and got to Dalton. But of course, Dalton turns into “Dalton” when he plays The Raiders and threw a great pass for a TD anyway.

How ineffective the defense is.
How much worse the O line is.

Bloodylimey
I’d rec this 100 times.
The O line and lack of running game, have been truly disappointing.

Karldared
How many injuries we have. The O play calling.
How bad the defense is on the Run game.

I don’t know…can’t think of any “surprises” – maybe hearing Koonce and Epps are both out for the season, after being a part of the strong D last year? But injuries are part of the game.
There’s still time to turn things around. We don’t know how the season will end. AOC may be starting in a week or two. Snowden might blossom in to a fierce DE. Pola-Mao might be a leader in the backfield.
This season, for me, hinges on the defense. Right now I have little or no faith in the OL to help the running game and they can’t just sling the ball all year like they did in the 4th quarter of the Baltimore game. Even if the Raiders get a lead they need the run game to finish. The O has to score 23-26 points a game and the D has to keep the enemy to 17-21 points.
Getsy has to start making in-game adjustments immediately. Players, especially on D, have to stop making “business decisions”.

1-1-4 In 6 games played in 2024 including preseason. No carry over from last year.

Biggest surprise has to be that we beat the Ravens with this team.
