An instant review of Week 9

A pick six, three turnovers by the quarterback, a missed short field goal, bad red-zone play, poor coaching decisions and giving up multiple first downs on third and long is a recipe for an upset loss and that’s what happened on Sunday in New Jersey when the Las Vegas Raiders visited the New York Giants:

Record: The Raiders are 5-3. The Giants are 3-6.

What it means:
This is a tough loss for Las Vegas. It hurts it in both the AFC West and the overall AFC playoff hunt. You can’t lose to bad teams in November and December … this one could sting down the road. The Raiders are now 2-1 under interim head coach Rich Bisaccia. The Raiders are now 3-16 in the game after their bye since 2003. It’s the worst mark in the NFL during that stretch.

Turning point:
Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by the Giants’ Xavier McKinney to give the Giants a 17-13 lead after the first drive of the second half. That set the tone for a bad half for Las Vegas and it couldn’t recover.

Injury report:
Raiders’ standout wide receiver Hunter Renfrow was limping after a play in the first quarter, but he stayed in the game. Also in the first quarter, excellent Las Vegas punter A.J. Cole was leveled on an illegal hit and was on the ground for several moments. Cole, like Renfrow, stayed in the game. Running back Josh Jacobs briefly left the game in the third quarter. Linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski and cornerback Keisean Nixon both left the game with ankle injuries. Pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue briefly left the game late in the third quarter. Defensive tackle Darius Philon injured his ankle in the fourth quarter and was taken to the locker room on a cart.

What’s next:
The Raiders have a big one as they host AFC West rival, the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday night on NBC at 5:20 p.m. PT. The Raiders can show the country that they are a serious threat in the AFC.
