Pete Carroll’s influence: Helping the young defensive backs

Las Vegas has a lot of players who could develop under new coach

Pete Carroll is a teacher.

When he spoke at his introductory press conference when he was named the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Pete Carroll spoke often of the importance of teaching.

With more than 50 years in the coaching field, there is no doubt Carroll has a passion for teaching the game and it is what he excites him about being back on the sideline.

So, while Carroll will spend time with players on the entire roster, one particular area where Carroll should have particular influence on the defensive backs. Carroll was a defensive back in his playing days and his coaching roots are as a secondary coach.

There are several young defensive backs on the Las Vegas roster who Carroll can help.

At cornerback, Jakorian Bennett was having a nice second season before he was lost for the season in November. he is the type of player that can grow under Carroll. Also, fellow starter Jack Jones is still just 27 and he can benefit from Carroll and his staff’s influence. 2024 draft picks, Decamerion Richardson and M.J. Devonshire (who was on the practice squad) are also young cornerbacks who have a chance to develop under Carroll.

At safety, watch for Isaiah Pola-Mao (who signed a contract extension this week), Thomas Harper and Trey Taylor to all get the chance to grow in Carroll’s system.

So, while Carroll’s influence will be wide-ranging, it will be fun to see how he can help this young group of players.
