3rd-year wide receiver has chance to become a top deep threat in the NFL with quarterback Geno Smith

Las Vegas Raiders WR Tre Tucker was a surprise third-round pick in 2023. When Dave Ziegler traded Darren Waller, the pick was used on the WR from Cincinnati who ran a 4.3 at the NFL combine. He was expected to play in the slot and become a deep threat for the Raiders.

Tucker displayed promise in his first year, averaging 17.1 yards per catch, showcasing his ability to win deep in the NFL. He struggled with drops in certain situations but showed potential for improvement.

In 2024, Tucker experienced a decline in yards per reception but an increase in production. He caught 47 catches for 539 yards and three touchdowns. While Tucker was able to win deep like he did the previous season, the quarterbacks he played with weren’t able to get him the ball consistently. Of his 20 targets plus 20 yards downfield, Tucker only caught 5, and even though he was winning outside.

This year, he has a new signal caller in Geno Smith. Smith was one of the best deep passers in the league. According to PFF, he was third in completion percentage on throws over 20 yards. This combination with Tucker can help lead to more explosive plays in the passing game with a consistent deep passer throwing the football.

Tre Tucker has developed as a route runner this year. Great release, uses his eyes to set up routes. A lot more nuance to his game.

Tucker’s ability to beat press coverage will give Smith plenty of looks. During OTAs, the combination started to flourish. The former third-round pick is gaining rapport with Smith, which will help open up the running game for Chip Kelly and Ashton Jeanty.

With Dont’e Thornton Jr. wanting to take away targets from Tucker, he needs to start fast during training camp. His toughness and ability to block can help him stand out and keep himself as the go-to when it comes to deep throws off play action and third down.

Tucker has to make the most of his opportunity with a quarterback who can throw the ball downfield. If he does, he could be the surprise receiver for the Raiders’ offense and make a name for himself around the league.
