Raiders Name Greg Olson Interim Offensive Coordinator After Firing Chip Kelly

December 12, 2025 by Raiders Nation

Greg Olson, Raiders

Though their playoff hopes are gone, the Las Vegas Raiders are still trying to salvage this season in some way and start building some momentum on the offensive end. The team fired Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator after just 11 games, but they didn’t immediately reveal who would be replacing him.

The Raiders currently rank 31st in points scored and 30th in total yards, as their offense has been abysmally poor. They have failed to top the 300-yard mark in six of their last seven games and have eclipsed 100 rushing yards in a game just twice this season.

But now the team has decided who will be replacing Kelly, and it is a familiar face to this franchise as QB coach Greg Olson has been named interim offensive coordinator, via Dianna Russini of The Athletic:

Olson is a longtime coaching veteran who got his first NFL job back in 2001 as quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers. And this will be his third stint as offensive coordinator for the Raiders. His first run came back in 2013 under Dennis Allen, where he lasted two seasons. Then Olson returned to the Raiders under Jon Gruden, serving as offensive coordinator for four seasons from 2018 through 2021.

Olson has also spent time with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jacksonville Jaguars in different roles, including offensive coordinator, quarterback’s coach, and assistant head coach.

The hope now is that Olson will be able to awaken this dormant Raiders offense that has two excellent young talents in tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty. However, the play of veteran quarterback Geno Smith has left a lot to be desired, while the offensive line has struggled as well, allowing 10 sacks in Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns.

This is an opportunity for Olson to secure the job permanently, should he demonstrate his capabilities and find a way to maximize the potential of the Raiders’ offense.

Quarterback Geno Smith flips off fans following loss to Browns

Frustrations were at a high following the Raiders’ loss to the Browns, as fans booed quarterback Geno Smith relentlessly throughout the game. Smith being sacked 10 times also added to it, and things boiled over for the quarterback afterwards as he was seen flipping off the fans as he left the field.
