Indy may need a temporary starter with Carson Wentz hurt
Our Matt Holder was one of the first people to connect a potential Marcus Mariota trade to the suddenly quarterback-needy Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts may need a quarterback with starter Carson Wentz out for 5-12 weeks after having foot surgery on Monday as he was hurt at the Colts’ training camp late last week.
Now, Betonline has betting odds set for who will be the Colts’ Week 1 starter. You guessed it, Mariota is one of the favorites.
Odds on who starts for the Colts in Week 1 (via @betonline_ag):
Jacob Eason (-125)
Nick Foles (+300)
Brett Hundley (+500)
Sam Ehlinger (+550)
Marcus Mariota (+600)
Philip Rivers (+1000)
Cam Newton (+1200)
Jimmy Garoppolo (+1200)— Jaime Eisner (@JaimeEisner) August 3, 2021
However, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the Colts aren’t focusing on trading for a quarterback at the moment.
The Colts are not trading for Foles, Minshew or Mariota at this time.
Carson Wentz begins rehabbing his foot after two weeks.
He hasn’t been ruled out week 1 but it’s optimistic.
If this relatively safe surgery & rehab gets complicated, then another vet QB will be considered.— Chris Mortensen (@mortreport) August 2, 2021
Also, as Vinny Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal pointed out on Twitter, the Raiders may not feel motivated to help a potential AFC Wild Card competitor by sending Mariota to Indianapolis.
Re: @Raiders Marcus Mariota as a potential trade target for @Colts: If you’re the Raiders, why would you consider helping a team you might have to deal with in Wild Card chase?

It will be interesting to see if the Colts do indeed look for a quarterback via a trade … and if the Raiders would consider sending Mariota to Indianapolis. If they could get a third-round pick, it may be worth pondering.
